I know I have mentioned this before but I love updating our holiday decor each year with fun, budget-friendly decor items! Bonus if it’s something we can do during craft time! This tassel ghost garland was so easy and fun and the kids love it! Here’s how to make your own:
HALLOWEEN TASSEL GHOST GARLAND
Supplies
- White yarn (I used some similar to this but any yarn will do!)
- Scissors
- Scotch or masking tape
- A book (the size of the book will determine the size of the tassel)
- Black embroidery floss (for the eyes)
How to make your tassel ghost garland
Now that you have all of your supplies, you can start making! This is seriously SO easy!
First, you will want to cut a piece of yarn about 8-10″ in length and tape it to the spine of your book. This will hold the tasseled yarn together.
Next, you will wrap the yarn the other direction around the book. Continue wrapping until you have the size of tassel you desire. (I wrapped ours around about 30 times.)
When this is complete, you will release the tape on the spine, and tie the piece of yarn in a double knot around the wrapped yarn.
After this step, you will take your scissors and carefully cut the yarn along the opposite side of the book, or where the pages open. (Careful not to cut your pages…this is why a board book works great but any book will do!)
Putting it together
Once you’ve cut through all the yarn, you have the first step of the tassel complete! Next you will want to trim another piece of yarn from your spool that is about 8-10″ in length.
The next step is to lay your tassel and tie it with the cut piece of yarn to create the ‘head’ portion of the ghost. Wrap and tie tight once, then continue wrapping around to use up more of the yarn, then tie tight in the back and trim off any extra yarn.
You are seeing the shape now! Your tassel is essentially complete but it will look more ghostly once you add the eyes! Here’s how to do that:
Take a 3″ piece of the black embroidery floss. You will chose one of the strands of yard in the head and tie the floss around it, knot it three times, then wrap around the back and knot one last time, then trim. Repeat for the other eye! (There may be a much better way to do this, maybe with beads, felt or glue but this is what I had on hand!)
Finally, you will string all of your ghosts together along one long strand of yarn! Just slide the yarn through the head of the ghost to where you want it, and tie the string one time around, then repeat with the other ghosts.
